Welcome to the PSA Women and Politics blog

Welcome to the PSA Women and Politics blog. We are scholars, academics and political scientists, working in universities around the UK and beyond. We all share an interest in gender and politics. This blog is the place to come for insightful, expert commentary on the role of women in politics.

  1. Dear PSA Women and Politics Group.
Rainbow has set this blog up to give us the opportunity to make a commentary on contemporary British politics. The near absence of women from the ‘new politics’ governing Britain has been a cause of great concern to many members of our group. Rainbow (among others) has been doing a sterling job of bringing our concerns to the attention of the media and the political class. I hope you have all seen our letter to the Times published last week http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/letters/article7125612.ece
I wonder whether we should now focus our activities on the lack of women putting themselves forward for the Labour leadership contest? Surely a capable women leader would provide a potentially powerful antidote to the boys club atmosphere of the recent election campaign. But why are able women not putting themselves forward? Do you think there is anything we can do as a group to encourage a capable woman to stand? Who do you think would be a good candidate? Please share your thoughts with us.
    Best wishes to you all
    Rosie Campbell
p.s. I’m not used to blogs as you can tell from the letter format!

  3. I was rather depressed at the comments submitted under this article encouraging Harriet Harman to run: http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/may/16/labour-leadership-women-candidates

There are many 'best' people for any given job, and diversity of life experience means some candiates have qualities the more typical candidates lack.
